Muzeum Łupka

The Municipal Museum in Budišov nad Budišovka was established in 1996 and was presented to the public in a new form with four exhibitions in 2015.

The most extensive mining of roofing slates in the Czech Republic took place in the Nízký Jeseník mountain range. The mining of slate raw material itself has been developing since time immemorial. Initially, slate stone was quarried in surface quarries and used as a building material for masonry and paving. It was only in the 18th century that slate for the production of roofing began to be mined in Nízké Jeseník (documented in 1775 near Svobodné Heřmanice). With the emergence of a new field of production "manufacturing roofing slates", mining boomed. In the middle of the 19th century, it was already an industrial sector, when mining took place in more than 50 places in Nízké Jeseník, and mining gradually moved to underground quarries. The geological-mining exposition provides a basic overview of rocks and minerals from the individual formations of the Moravian-Silesian kulm and an overview of the mining history in the area. It is made up of geological exhibits, original mining tools and implements from more than 50 abandoned mining sites. Unique objects are − a threshing machine from the Kunz underground quarry from the end of the 19th century, a wooden trough from the western and a wooden track from the southern Haschke underground quarry, etc. The paleontological collections represent finds of fossilized organisms, plants and traces of the activity of organisms. Visually, the exhibition is complemented by original period photographs and documents. The biggest unique items are two wooden mine cars that are more than 100 years old. They were lifted from the Svobodná Heřmanice quarry and from the Černé dole.

The town of Budišov nad Budišovka is shrouded in legends about its origin based on alleged miners' huts (miners' dwellings). The exposition of silver and lead mining in Budišovské deals with the interpretation of these topics. Evidence of the oldest mining today is only the town coat of arms and written documents of town rights. The city has inaccessible underground corridors, some of which may have been mine corridors. However, silver was really obtained from Budišov ores. In the 19th century, mining on the local ore veins was resumed by Franz Kuppido and Wilibald Posselt. Galena from local deposits, photographs of mines and unique historical maps are displayed in the exhibition. The image of mining is complemented by a model of the shaft and replicas of mining tools.

Two world wars and the industrial revolution made the 20th century a period of alternating economic ups and downs, which also affected the shale industry. The exhibition is accompanied by the personality of businessman Jan

Rihák, later an employee of a state enterprise. Thanks to his efforts, it was possible to partially restore the slate industry in the Czech Republic after both world wars. From the knowledge of Jan Řihák, his books and documents, a number of people interested in the topic of mining and processing of slates are still being educated to this day. Among the most interesting objects of the exhibition are products from the Wondruška factory, original documents, catalogs and price lists from the beginning of the 19th century, gramophone records from the Hrubovodská mill on slate, etc.

It clearly follows the historical development of the important Moravian border town from its founding in the 13th century to the present day. Interesting are the copies of medieval documents and historical photographs on display.

Of the most significant stages of the city's development, the exposition describes the period of the creation of craft guilds and the beginnings of Budišovsko's industry.

The small geological park in the garden consists of a bat gallery with life-size models of bats, piles of slates overgrown with flowers, examples of fossils in an authentic natural environment, a musical instrument - a slatophone, etc. There is a chipping room for processing slates in the garden, where the visitor can try the work of master splitters. A calligraphy workshop for 15 people is located in the garden concept, where it is possible to paint with a brush and water on slate boards.

Nízký Jeseník is represented especially sedimentary rocks, clayey shale, siltstone, a dark variety of sandstone called droba and, to a lesser extent, conglomerate. However, there are not only sedimentary rocks in Nízké Jeseník, rocks of volcanic origin in the Bruntál region are a very interesting geological element. In the Oder exposition, basalts from the lava flows of the Velký Roudný volcano, volcanic pumas that were ejected by the Venus volcano about 1.8 million years ago, and other interesting things are installed.

Kosmos i geologia - ekspozycja w przyrodzie

The exhibition is located at the Halaška observation tower. On three panels, it deals with the influence of the surrounding universe on the geology of the planet Earth and the world-renowned personality of the astronomer F.K. Halaška. The exhibition is complemented by geo-benches, a sundial and a star map.

As an invitation, we bring an excerpt from the quoted text on the educational panels: It is clear that most of the geomorphological units in the vicinity have developed with the main contribution of internal events, arising mainly from the flow of heat inside the Earth. Events that take place under the influence of the surrounding universe and subsequently have an effect on the geological structure and geomorphological development of the Earth, usually take place immediately, or on the contrary very slowly over many millions of years, or continuously, while this activity remains hidden from human perception. It is thus almost impossible for a person to observe such events.

From many topics, for example, you will learn what effect the Ice Age had on the slate landscape and where it is possible to observe rocks brought from Scandinavia in this particular period.
