Paleontological sites

Boňkov

The fossil fauna of bivalves and goniatites of the Lower Carboniferous (goniatite subzone Goβel-Goβmu), confirmed by new collections, comes from the heaps after the mining of roofing slates.

In the locality of Boňkov, there is a site of European significance, Soudka's tunnel, the object of protection is the small hornbill (Rhinolophus hipposideros). Protection is determined by the Summary of Recommended Measures for the Europeanly Important Locality of Soudkova Stola CZ0713741.

The Boňkov location is accessible to the public via the road that passes in close proximity to the location. The flooded Olšovec quarry and the Potštát rock town are located near Boňkov; by combining these locations, it is possible to organize field excursions focusing on shale mining, geology and paleontology.

Šternberk - Chabičov

In the bends and cuts, the road emerges on the surface of the rocks of the Stínava-Chabičovské Formation (Devon, Ems). Positions of tentaculite shales yielded an abundant macrofauna in places with trilobites, nautiloids and a rare eurypterid finding. Terrestrial flora and fossil traces are also found.

The location is not well known to the lay public. Professional geological excursions are organized here.
